Rabies and the Law

Rabies is a vaccine preventable disease. A healthy animal or human can get rabies when bitten, licked or scratched by a sick animal. The virus lives in the saliva and nervous tissue.

North Carolina law requires owners of dogs, cats, and ferrets to have their pets currently vaccinated against rabies, beginning at four months of age. It is also a requirement that these animals wear a valid rabies tag at all times. Failure to comply with these requirements could result in a fine or fee. Never allow your pet's rabies vaccination to expire.

Vaccinations are available from any licensed veterinarian. Additionally, Henderson County Animal Services partners with veterinarians and the Health Department to offer low-cost rabies clinics twice a year. Typically, the rabies vaccination clinic for cats is held in March, and the clinic for dogs is held in May. Pets are wonderful companions. Be a responsible pet owner and vaccinate your pet against rabies.

If you think your pet was exposed to rabies or have questions, call the Henderson County Sheriff Office's Animal Enforcement Division at 697-4911. Additional information on public safety, stray animals, and dangerous animals can be found at Animal Services.
